Porthmadog house

Founder Magnus Ström and I began this production by establishing a tone of voice and the unique characteristics of this project. The use of Corten steel and slate, which, as you see in the film, are presented as macro shots to drive home Magnus connecting the history of Porthmadog to the materials in this design, creating a sense of place.

“Porthmadog House mines the rich seam of Wales’ industrial past at the Dwyryd estuary”, as described by Wallpaper magazine.

Key to the final cut was my stringent approach to shooting the building, focusing on its leading lines and architectural language, planning the camera movements to flow seamlessly with the pace of Magnus’ voiceover.

BUILDING THE SCHOONER MALABAR IV

To showcase the skills of boatbuilder Ben Harris, his facilities and put him on the map as the go-to UK traditional boat builder I suggested creating regular content for YouTube, which raised his profile and grew an audience.

In December 2024, he approached me to document the build of a 47-foot John Alden schooner ‘MALABAR IV’. The ongoing video series is directed, shot, and edited by me and published on my YouTube channel dedicated to classic yachts and traditional boats, Classic Yacht TV.

“The best classic boat video websites: Beautifully shot and conceived films of regattas, boats for sale, boat builders and myriad other classic topics ranging from wooden surfboards to navigation to practical how-tos. World-class photographer and film-maker Emily Harris is the founder.” Classic Boat magazine

THIS WOMAN’S WORK

This Woman's Work is a portrait film of UK-based traditional boatbuilder Holly Latham. Through sound and image, it attempts to explore gender and power. Enduring observational footage of Holly building a wooden boat pleads for acceptance of a woman's calm and methodical craft. This short will be premiered on the Innovation stage at the 2024 Port Townsend Wooden Boatshow (US) on 8th September.

Shot in an afternoon in Holly's boatbuilding workshop in Cornwall, I wanted to shadow her at work. In contrast to the majority of my marine-related portfolio, this was the first time in my career that I could sit at length and observe a female boatbuilder working.

“Meditative to watch” - Belinda Joslin, Founder of Women in Boatbuilding

“beautiful and very peaceful and great to see this kind of work continuing” – Lucy Dale, Curator of Maritime History, Royal Museums Greenwich

“Each shot is wonderful. Her focus is wonderful too.” – David Moore, Artist & Principal Lecturer of photography, University of Westminster.
